Compression is the reduction in size of data to save disk space or transmission time. CDP 3.0 reduces data through encoding information using fewer information-bearing units than an un-encoded representation would use.  CDP works with Zlib encoding schemes (also known as Gzip) and QuickLZ.

Compression is a process of encoding information using a smaller size than an un-encoded representation would use through the use of Zlib and QuickLZ encoding schemes. This helps reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space or transmission bandwidth. Compression is performed at the Hard Disk sector level (block level) on the Host during a Backup by the CDP Agent.

Compression Type

You can select one of two (2) possible values of Compression Type in the drop-down menu or disable Compression by choosing 'None':

  • None - No compression will be applied. "None" is used to complete Backups in the shortest amount of time over fast LANs (Local Area Networks).
  • Zlib - Selecting this value means turning the Zlib compression on. The Zlib type of compression will be applied.
  • QuickLZ - This is the default value. Selecting this value means turning the QuickLZ compression on. The Quick:Z type of compression will be applied.

Disk Safes can use Zlib or QuickLZ compression and are capable of delivering about a 2:1 compression ratio in most environments. For Backups over the Internet or other slow links we recommend turning compression on.

Compression Level for Zlib

If the "Compression Type" is set 'Zlib' then select a Compression level from the drop-down menu. The following values are available to be selected:

  • Low
  • Medium
  • High - This is the slowest but produces the most compact result files for Zlib.
