Bare-Metal Restore Fails With Internal Error
Symptom
Your bare-metal restore fails with errors like:
02/21/2008 16:54:55 Internal error: Received error from agent
02/21/2008 16:54:55 AGENT: Partition restore failed.
02/21/2008 16:54:55 AGENT: reading partition records from network failed
02/21/2008 16:54:55 AGENT: could not open partition restore device
Cause
This means the device was not present when the agent tried to write blocks to it. (could not open partition restore device).
Resolution
- Make sure you selected the device to be restored. For example if you have /dev/sda with a partition /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda1 bare-metal restore fails. Make sure you selected /dev/sda for restore. If you didn't the partition table restore won't run and /dev/sda1 won't exist.
- Check your Partition Table Restore task for errors. Did it fail?
- A common cause of Partition Table Restores failing is it could not find the device on your target host. For example, if you are restoring the partition table for /dev/sda and /dev/sda does not exist on the target host then the partition table restore will fail.
- Consider using a file-by-file restore when restoring to different hardware configurations.
