Bare-Metal Restore to a New Linux Server
Question
Is it possible to install cPanel on a new server and copy the files from R1Soft, such as the home directories of each account, the configuration files from cPanel, etc? How do I do a bare-metal restore to a new Linux server with the new hardware configuration (different drivers, main board, etc.)?
Solution
To restore to different hardware:
1. Assuming your old Linux installation supports your new hardware:
- Create storage configuration on new server, e.g. partition table, logical volumes, make file systems
- Perform a file restore of all files
- Edit your /etc/fstab and Lilo/Grub config to reflect new storage configuration
- Run lilo / grub to write the boot loader onto your new disk
This shortcut will save you from having to reinstall Linux or cPanel.
2. If your old kernel does not support your new hardware, then follow these steps:
- Install a newer version of your Linux distribution
- Install cPanel in a new server and copy the files from R1Soft like the home directories of each account, the configuration files from cPanel, etc.
