Bare-Metal Restore to a XenServer Virtual Machine
Question
We have backed up a Dell PowerEdge 2950 Windows 2003 server. Would we be able to do a Bare-Metal Restore to a Citrix XenServer 5.5 update 1 VM? The space allocated is the same hard drive space.
Solution
In this case, where you're restoring from a physical machine to a virtual machine, you're essentially restoring to dissimilar hardware. Technically, this isn't supported, but it should work in most cases.
Note: You would want to boot the Xen virtual machine with the live CD image, and kick off the Bare-Metal Restore from the CDP Server web interface. Once the restore is finished, you may have to do some manual configuration to get the correct drivers installed for the new 'hardware'. A Windows system, booting from the Windows install CD and running a 'repair install', will usually take care of that.
