Moving Your Linux Control Server Onto New Hardware

Symptom

Slow performance. A desire for improved performance. Hardware needing to be cycled out of production.
Suspected hardware issues. Hardware upgrade for your Control Server machine.

Cause

Your Control Server is in need of newer, faster, or more robust hardware to keep up with demand.

Resolution

While R1Soft does not have a 'supported' method of migrating your control server data over to new hardware. This process itself is fairly straightforward, and you have your existing control server to fall back on if anything should become amiss during the startup of the new machine.

(32 bit to 32 bit - Linux to Linux instructions)
Install OS and Control Server software onto the new machine.
Shut down the service on both machines. Be sure no jobs are currently running.
Copy/overwrite the install directory ( /usr/r1soft/buserver )  from existing machine to new machine.

(32 bit to 64 bit - Linux to Linux instructions)
Upgrading from 32 bit Control Server to 64 bit Control Server is again not supported, but is straightforward as well.
Install the OS and 64 bit control server onto new hardware.
Shut down the service on both machines. Be sure no jobs are currently running.
Copy over ONLY THESE directories from the existing Control Server to the new machine.

/usr/r1soft/buserver/db /usr/r1soft/buserver/etc ## Everything EXCEPT server.conf! /usr/r1soft/buserver/log /usr/r1soft/buserver/default-volume

Your license key will detect the appearance of new hardware, and request activation.
Contact R1Soft to deactivate your key, so you can reactivate it on the new Control Server.

At this time, there is not a tested method to move the Control Server between Linux and Windows.
