CDP 3.0 Vocabulary
To go along with all of the advances in CDP 3.0 we have some new terminology. In some places the concept is the same and we have come up with new terms to describe CDP Server operations that were confusing to users. In other places the old terminology just didn't make any sense. In 3.0 there is no backup schedule. It is now a Data Protection Policy and it much better describes what is going on in 3.0. The 3.0 Data Protection policy only barely resembles a 2.0 backup task. It is much more powerful.
The type of backup that CDP 3 performs on a server is called by industry analysts "Asynchronous Replication". We call it CDP for short. It is not full or incremental backup. It is replication. So to make this clear we have some changes in vocabulary in CDP 3.
- Disk Safe
All data needed to perform any kind of restore for an agent
- Replication
The operation of copying block level Deltas from the Agent to the CDP Server into a new recovery-point. Incremental Backup in CDP 2.0
- Data Protection Policy
Scheduling, recovery point retention rules, archiving, file/folder excludes, MySQL configuration: Basically everything needed to configure data protection for an agent. Called a Backup Task in CDP 2.0
- Recovery Point Retention
The rules that define how many recovery points to keep in the Disk Safe. Old Recovery Points are merged.
Note: in CDP 3.0 Advanced Archiving Rules also create recovery points. This was called Rotation Policy in CDP 2.0
- Merging Recovery Points
The process of merging an older recovery point into a new recovery point. Deltas that have changed between the two recovery points can be discarded and the space they consume in the Disk Safe freed. The Merging Process was called "Delete Incremental" in CDP Server 2.0
- Export
Means the exporting of files from a recovery point in the Disk Safe to an off-site server or local hard disk. Called Archiving in CDP 2.0
- Archiving
Only used to refer the advanced recovery point archiving rules available in CDP 3.0 Single Server Pro and CDP 3.0 Enterprise Server. Advanced archiving rules achieve the most recently available recovery point as configured on a daily/weekly/monthly basis for long term storage.
- Recovery Point
The point-in-time Virtual Full Backup of an entire server.
- Initial Replica
The first recovery point created containing all used (minus file excludes) parts of the hard disk. Subsequent synchronizations only contain Deltas. In CDP 2.0 the Initial Replica was referred to as the Seed.
- Deltas
Block level changes between Synchronizations
